Maka Black Elk is the grandson of Lakota Holy Man, Black Elk. He is the Executive Director for Truth and Healing at Red Cloud Indian School.

Maka Black Elk. Black Elk is the Executive Director for Truth and Healing at Red Cloud Indian School. He graduated from the school in 2005. After graduating from the University of San Francisco, he earned his Master’s degrees in Peace & Human Rights Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College and in Educational Leadership at the University of Notre Dame. Maka Black Elk returned to Red Cloud Indian School as a teacher and later an administrator before taking on his current role in 2022. Learn more at www.redcloudschool.org and boardingschoolhealing.org.

Maka Black Elk’s ancestor, Heȟáka Sápa, was commonly known as Black Elk (December 1, 1863 – August 19, 1950). He was a wičháša wakȟáŋ (“medicine man, holy man”) and heyoka of the Oglala Lakota people. He was a second cousin of the war leader Crazy Horse and fought with him in the Battle of Little Bighorn. He survived the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. He toured and performed in Europe as part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Learn more.
