Douglas Public LibraryRev.Murray Crookes, pastor of Sitka United Methodist Church and First UnitedMethodist Church of Ketchikan, will facilitate an evening of reflection,listening, and conversation centered on the complexity of storytelling,truth-telling, and how we respond when histories and lived experienceschallenge what we have been told or previously understood.
PastorMurray is a Saint Lawrence Island (SLI) Yupik man. He brings personal storiesshaped by both Indigenous and white colonial heritage, speaking honestly aboutthe conflicting worldviews that can emerge when navigating multiplehistories and identities. Murray’s grandmother, Katherine Anderson, survivedboarding school and tuberculosis before moving from the Seward sanitarium toSitka to become a nurse. Because his family settled in Southeast Alaska beforeANCSA, they became members of Native corporations including Sealaska andSheeAtiká. Murray reflects on what it means to be an SLI Yupik man living andserving in Tlingit country.
Thisworkshop is not a behavioral health session or clinical training. Rather, it isan invitation to pause, think, learn, and listen, especially for those hearingAlaska Native narratives of history for the first time. Through story-sharingand guided reflection, participants will have space to process, ask questions,and consider how we move forward with humility, curiosity, and care whenstories do not align.
